Most large hospitals now have pain management clinics. These clinics are mainly involved with the treatment of chronic pain which has not been amenable to the commonly used  painkillers.

The consultants in charge are often from an anaesthetic background, though other specialties such as neurology, rheumatology and orthopaedics are involved.
The clinics also employ specially trained nurses, psychologists, physiotherapists and alternative medicine medicine practitioners such as acupuncturists.

An holistic, multidisciplinary approach to the patient's pain problem is used.

I run such a clinic in Guildford. Being from an anaesthetic background I have a very strong background in the understanding of the anatomy and physiology of pain as well as the effects of drugs and other techniques to control pain.
