Epidural injection
Injections can be made into the epidural space within the spinal column. The technique is similar to that used to relieve labour pains. Epidurals are particularly helpful in cases of sciatica.

X-ray targeted injections
With the assistance of X-ray screening, injections can be made onto specific nerve roots or into facet joints in the spine. Facet joints are the small joints in between the vertebrae of the spine and they are often implicated in low back pain.

Radiofrequency lesioning
If steroid injections relieve the pain, special equipment called a radiofrequency lesion generator may be used to burn side branches of nerves to give longlasting or permanent pain relief.
This technique is called denervation.

Cryolesioning
Occasionally, it may be appropriate to freeze nerves using a special instrument called a cryoprobe. This can also produce long term relief.
